Gone are the days of carrying bunch of keys for opening doors. Gone are the days of keeping separate keys for separate locks. Now you would be able to unlock all the doors and cases without the help of any key. The idea is not new and has been in use for quite some time but slowly and steadily it is becoming popular and coming in people’s eye. Right! We are talking about biometric door locks.

Biometric locks provide an entirely new level of interface with extreme ease & security. The most noticeable benefit is getting rid of carrying cumbersome keys. It also mitigates a range of problems associated with PIN, standard key, RFID, magnetic stripe cards, etc., while providing new levels of ease. Biometric door locks identify the authorized people on the basis of their biometric properties, already fed earlier into the system. The unique biometric characteristics of individuals allow only correct users to enter the system.

For quite some time the use of biometric access systems, particularly biometric door locks have been plagued by two flaws. First one has been the high cost of these devices in order to achieve accurate performance that put them out of the general consumer range. The second problem has been the visual design characteristics. But in recent years biometric device manufacturers have been able to sort out both these flaws. You can now find a range of biometric access devices in the market at an affordable rate.

Types of Biometric Technology

A number of identification technologies have been used by the biometric door locks manufacturers, such as fingerprint recognition technology, face recognition technology, voice recognition technology, iris recognition technology, etc. Each of these technologies work on some type of unique and individual biometric properties that we inherit. In this way one can’t copy or duplicate one’s unique identification like the password and access card, ultimately enhancing the security.

Unlocking Doors with Eyes

Now open doors with your eyes! You might have seen it many times in sci-fi movies. But the fiction has been changed to reality. Researchers from Queensland University of Technology’s faculty of Built Environment and Engineering, has achieved sorting out one of the final obstacles to the everyday application of iris scanning technology. Already being used, this technology will become the part of our daily life in coming decade.

Like fingerprint every individual iris is unique and even the iris pattern of the left and right eye of the same person differs from each other. The iris pattern is fixed throughout a person’s lifetime. Iris recognition confirms the identity of a person based on who the person is instead of what the person possesses, such as an ID card or password.

Lubrication is imperative. Locks consist of numerous small moving parts, and in order to keep them working correctly, they need lubrication. Make sure to use something like WD-40 or Tri-Flow, because these will not leave residue that will ?gum? up the small parts inside your locks. Just a small squirt where you insert the key could save you a lot of money in the future. Especially here in Massachusetts, the weather can really hurt your locks, so it is vital to keep them lubricated. Take a close look at your key. Every key has ?hills? and ?valleys? and if the slopes have become less sheer and the key looks worn out, it might not work much longer. Bring it to your local locksmith and have them decode it and cut a ?key by code.? This will make it work like new. Dont force it!

There are various types of security door locks that are available in todays markets, both on the internet and in security stores. Because everyone has different security needs, they are designed to fit a wide range of budgets, needs and wants. The types of Security Door locks found in the market range from simple deadbolts and chain and ball locks that can be found in almost every home, to locks that use technological advances that were unimaginable a few years ago.

Some of these include and are not limited to locks that use biometric information, such as fingerprint matching pads. Here, the users? fingerprints are in the security system and for access to be granted, one needs to place their fingers on the finerprint pad to verify their identity. Another kind is digital locks that have keypads where the user needs to key in a security code into the keypad for access to be granted.

Various security concerns will influence the decision you make. This can be aided by research conducted on the internet, and added to that, when you go into the stores, you will find that there are experts in this field on hand to advise you and help make a decision. Having the locks is not enough. As the owner of these locks, you will need to understand and know how the different mechanisms of the locks work, how to install them and how to uninstall them, advantages and disadvantages of the locks you choose and also what the word on the street is regarding intruders and the ease with which they work on the various locks.

With increased insecurity, your first concern is the safety of your family?s security or that of your business venture, and so you have to find ways and means of protecting what you hold dearest to you at whatever cost.

Fingerprint door locks are just another example of how our society has evolved into the technological era so quickly. These kinds of locks are great for protecting your office, building, or even your home. But before purchasing any, you probably have similar questions as many others do.

1. Are they affordable?

Because of how technological these locks are, a common question is how expensive they are. A few years ago you would only find fingerprint door locks at CEO?s homes and celebrity homes because of the outrageous prices. That has completely changed now though. Any home can find an affordable lock and have it installed for a reasonable price.

2. How do you open the door?

Every fingerprint door lock is different, but a majority of them have three ways you can go about opening the door: mechanical key override, keypad-code, and fingerprint reader. The fingerprint reader is the most common one for households because of the many uses it will receive. The keypad is best for houses and offices that will have a one time entrance from visitors. And lastly, the mechanical key override is for in case of an emergency or dead battery.

3. How reliable are they?

A few years ago, they were just getting tested out and were truly not that reliable for the amount people were paying for them. However, a lot has been learned over the past few years and now they are extremely reliable. You would be surprised at how they never jam up, almost always open on the first finger scan, and the battery generally lasts an entire year.

4. How secure are they?

Fingerprint door locks give you added security when compared to the typical padlock or deadbolt. With these locks, there is a specialized key override as oppose to a key slot. This makes it impossible to pick the lock, which eliminates burglars from entering your home through the doors.

5. How many fingerprints can the lock hold?

This is often a concern among households who want their kids to be able to get in. And amazingly, a fingerprint door lock can hold at least 75 fingerprints. The installation is quick and easy, and generally requires admin fingerprints to be entered in first. Only the admin fingerprints can add or delete fingerprints in the future.

Getting fingerprint door locks for your home, office, or building is a good idea. It can increase the safety of your home and free you of losing your keys all the time. And with technology continuing to advance, they have become affordable and extremely reliable.

Back in the past, you needed to buy a luxury car in order to have one of those handy power door locks on your car. Everyone else was stuck with the ordinary door locks – the kind requiring you to have your key handy every time you want to unlock your vehicle. These days, however, everyone seems to own one. You see people all over, pushing their keypad to open their specific car parked somewhere in a parking lot full of cars. Hardly anyone with a newer vehicle has to suffer the extra effort of actually using their car keys to unlock their vehicle or push the door locked when they leave their car anymore.

Believe it or not, power door locks have been around for nearly a half century. This feature was initially used on a particular kind of luxury Packard. It took a number of years until this convenient feature was gradually introduced and used as a standard feature on luxury vehicles everywhere. Now, you needn’t buy a luxury car to have a power door lock as on option on your automobile.

While it’s easy to get out of the habit, you still can open and lock your door the regular way. Regular door locks are installed on every vehicle and your key still works in the lock provided on the outside of the vehicle. You may never need them but, if the battery on the remote keypad goes bad, at least you have a backup method of getting into your car.

This optional feature has some major advantages over the regular method of opening your car. For example, it’s very easy to use and you can have your arms full while still being able to open your vehicle without digging for your keys, trying to get into your car without dropping something. With this power feature, all you need to do is push the remote keypad, grab the handle and open your car door.

Another helpful thing about remote power door locks is that the remote often opens all the doors to the car at the same time. That way, if you have children, they can get themselves into the car without you having to unlock another door to let them in. In addition, if you’re putting your groceries onto the passenger seat, the door is already open for you to throw them in and hop into the driver’s side without messing with locks and keys.

There are actually two types of systems available in remotely-operated power door locks. If you have the more complex system, there will be a body controller in the automobile that monitors a specific radio frequency; when you send the correct code to the controller, it unlocks the car door. If you own the simpler system, you send a signal to actuators in the vehicle which lock or unlock the car door. There are lots of these kinds of locks available and many different companies manufacture them. If you don’t own one but want one installed after purchasing your vehicle, it takes only a couple of hours and can be installed in almost any car. The costs of such a system depend on the type of system you acquire.

Changing your locks may sound like a simple task, but this is true only if you know what you are doing. There are many different styles of handles on the market. The locking mechanisms on certain styles vary and each has a unique function. If you are going to change your locks, be sure to know what type works best and why. Here is some useful information on styles and basics of changing a lock. Knowing what the lock is used for is important in finding the style that best meets your security needs.

Free through Passage Handles: These handles are exactly as they sound. You will not have to worry about locks. They come in either a knob type handle style or a level style which is very popular. Before purchasing these handles, though, be sure you do not need a lock.

Privacy Door Knobs: These handles are often used in the bedroom or bathroom. You can unlock the door by either turning the knob or turning an extra switch on the inside of the door. These are great for those areas where privacy is desired most.

Security Deadbolt Lock: The single deadbolt lock is a great style lock is good for any entrance to the home, whether the front or back door. However, it is best to use this lock with doors that do not have side lights or a glass pane since entrance would be fairly easy. One would only have to break the glass and reach in to turn the knob. The double deadbolt lock can provide extra strength and security to your doors. It can be locked form the inside or the outside using a key. You can also add a chain, for example, to provide even more security.

Decorative Door Knobs, Deadbolt and Latch Set: These handles help improve your home’s appearance. They are often placed on French doors. You can also use them on pantries if there is nothing hazardous inside, which should be kept from small children for instance. There are no locks on these decorative handles, but a little more security can be implemented with a decorative deadbolt and latch set. You can use these two pieces together or by themselves, depending on your needs.

You must now determine if the door handle you currently have is appropriate. To make this determination, you should first look at the latch plate. The hole may not be deep enough for a higher quality latch. Open and remove the existing latch plate, which is on the inside of your door. If it does not fit into the old hole, you will need to chisel the hole to give it a deeper depth. Also, be sure to check that the plunger for the deadbolt lines up with the hole in the frame since the lock will not provide proper security otherwise. Adding longer screws into the pre-drilled areas on the latch plate can add extra security.

Congratulations on moving in to your new home. Of course when we use the word new in this instance we mean that the home is new to our family. Most times when we move home we move into a house, apartment or condominium that has been owned before.

If other people have owned, or rented, your home before you, this means that they must have had keys to your home. This means that changing the locks on your new abode is a top priority.

But the folks that you bought your new home from are a real nice family and you reason that they would not sneak back with a spare set of keys and burgle you. Most probably not, but the thing is that you just don’t know if they have handed out copies of the keys to your home.

How do you know that a spare key was not loaned to a tradesman, pet sitter, delivery person or visiting friend or relative? Sure the key was handed back when the job was done, or the visit was over, but what if a copy was made?

Let’s be cynical for a moment. Apart from the number of times the previous owners handed out a spare key can you really be so sure of the honesty of the family itself? For sure they seemed nice enough people, but then they were selling you their home, how do you know what they are really like? All it would take is for the one dishonest member of that family to sell a set of keys to a housebreaker and that means that your new home is in no way secure.

Changing locks may involve a comparatively small expense and a bit of inconvenience, but nothing like the expense and inconvenience of a thief using a copied key to walk into your home.

Remember that it is of little use just changing the lock to your front door. All external doors need to have their locks replaced and that includes the garage door, especially so if there is a door that leads from the garage into the house.

Alright, you realize that changing locks to your new home is a top of the list task. But you may not want to simply change like for like. Perhaps the previous owners were happy with a lower level of security than you demand for your family. You may want to replace any spring latch type locks with deadbolt locks. Also check whether the existing latch plates are deep enough for the new locks that you are fitting.

So that’s it. You’ve changed all the external locks and made sure the locks that you fitted were of a good quality. No worries for you about keys to your home in the hands of thieves.

There’s just one thing. At some point in time you will need to loan a key to a repair man who needs to call when there just can’t be a family member home to let him in. Sooner or later it happens.

Of course you would only loan a key when absolutely necessary, but do you want to go changing locks every time that you have to do that?

Consider fitting keyless locks. Should you need to allow temporary access to a repair man, delivery person or visiting friend you give them a temporary code and when the repairs are done or your guest is gone, you simply delete the code. They cannot return and gain entry into your home.

Fingerprint locks go one better. There are no codes to give out. You grant someone entry authorization by scanning their fingerprint and retaining it in the lock system. When you no longer need them to have access you simply delete their print.

Changing locks as soon as you move into a new home helps give you the peace of mind that someone can’t just walk in and help themselves.

Electronic locks offer a degree of certainty that the regular locks can not be achieved otherwise. Its sophisticated technology has virtually impossible to circumvent. Most of them even have the traditional key obsolete, so that the problem of unauthorized key duplication.

Depending on the type of electronic lock you have, you can ask for a code, your own password, a security token (such as a special card or remote control), or even simple access.

Of the three – the first one is the most popular. Those electronic locks use keypad locks with letters, numbers or characters. Characters must be entered in a specific order, in order for the locks to be opened, so that any person, who is not privy to the password, will not bypass its security.

Electronic locks are very common, since they do not consider picking lock or key duplication ?as threats. Those locks require security tokens such as a magnetic card, a remote, or an encoded key (which are not duplicated as easily as regular keys) to open. A remarkable advantage of these locks is the fact that their remote controls and cards are tougher to find and to identify than a traditional key is.

Due to its high level of development and costs, the third type of electronic lock is less common than the other two. But it is probably safer, simply because they use biometrics as a key. This means that the owners of these biometric devices only need their fingers or eyes to gain access.

This is not only convenient (no need to remember), it is also far more secure, because criminals can not hope to learn, an access password, or duplicate the access device. Electronic locks, which fall under the category of fingerprint scans, biometric security behavior retinal scans, or voiceprint identification to verify their users.

Switching to electronic security doesn’t take a lot of effort. Starting an online search( Search engines) for locksmiths or home security companies, make sure these companies have electronic locks, and see that they can deliver and install it in your residence or place of business. In few minutes you can benefit from a lock in your business, only with your own biometric print, your code, or a remote control.

Windows can present an opportunity for burglars and intruders to gain entry into your home. True, and intruder can always just break window glass, the the noise of breaking glass is usually avoided by most intruders. But burglars are clever and can always find ways to break in without smashing the window glass.

Old windows framed in aluminum offer a simple entry point because they can be lifted right out of the channel and set aside without ever breaking the glass. This is easily prevented by carefully drilling a couple of holes in the window part of the frame. A couple of screws in those holes removes the possibility of someone lifting the window out.

Even when old aluminum windows are protected from being lifted out, those old locks common on these windows can easily be forced open with a small screwdriver. You can still make these old windows more secure by purchasing various locks at any hardware store.

You want to look for three things in a window lock. Effectiveness is the most important. New window locks aren’t worth much if there not effective at stopping a burglar. Secondly, they should look nice and fit in with window style and decoration style of the room. Finally, they need to be affordable. Good effective locks shouldn’t break the budget.

The locks on old windows are not as effective as you might want, when it comes to your homes security. If you have more recently installed windows, they still might need some better locking systems. There are different kinds of locks for every style of window in use today. And any window style that is common in your community should have good locks available at your local hardware store.

Matching locks with your interior decorating might be more of a challenge, and may require visiting some on-line retailers. For some window styles, you can find locks that are practically invisible to anything less than close scrutiny. If all else fails, there’s always paint.

Matching the budget with a set of locks takes some consideration. It’s hardly affordable to have someone intrude into your home. Not to mention the loss in sense of security and privacy. It’s best to consider how many windows you need new locks for, and spend as much as you can reasonably afford.

For sliding windows, there are some very effective locks that cost pennies. You can find wood dowel sticks at any hardware store. Cut to length and dropped into the window channel prevents it from being opened. You can even cut it an inch or two short to provide fresh air during the evening hours.

One of the best ways of locking your large patio doors is a dead-bolt. They are very secure, and affordable. The can be installed at the top or bottom of the window and you can find ones with a key or simple lever actuation.

Window style is largest determination of what lock style you can use. But the hardware store in your area should carry locks for window styles common in your locality. Just remember the three criteria ? effective, blending with the decor, and affordability.
